JOSEPH CIPOLLA
In 1986, Sir Peter Wright invited Joseph Cipolla to England's legendary Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet where artists are revered like sports and movie stars. Cipolla became a favorite with audiences, and choreographers, for his artistry, technique, insight and ability to portray any role.
Sadler's Wells received its Royal charter with the Royal Ballet and Royal Ballet School in 1956. Renamed the Birmingham Royal Ballet in 1990, and granted independence in 1997 under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and Lady Sarah Chatto, they engage only the world's best, an honor and distinction for artists, Joseph Cipolla, Catherine Batcheller, and Michael Shannon, Configuration Dance Theatre's leading artists.
In 1993, Cipolla was nominated for a Lawrence Olivier Award in recognition of his achievements in dance, the most prestigious award in British theatre, equivalent to the "Oscars" in Hollywood, and "Tony Awards" on Broadway. Invited to return and perform at the 1994 and 1995 Olivier Award Ceremonies, Cipolla's masterful original roles during 16-years with Birmingham Royal Ballet are the touchstone by which others are compared.
Cipolla retired to his New York home in 2002, but has returned for administrative and dancing roles. In 2007, Ballet-Dance Magazine wrote about how British "ballet saw the welcome return of long time favorite Joseph Cipolla as De Guiche in David Bintley's 'Cyrano,' and even under costume and heavy make-up, there was no mistaking his commanding presence."
SUSAN JAFFE
Countless journalists have written about Susan Jaffe's 22-year legendary reign at American Ballet Theatre, but no one better than Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times. "Susan Jaffe had it all. She was our country's long-stemmed American rose She raised the standard of dancing She matched dazzle with eloquent form She was determined to extend her range and did not hesitate to remold herself Few ballerinas in the world excelled in as wide a repertory.
Jaffe still "extends her range" in roles as author, television host, actress, educator, orator, business owner, volunteer, artistic advisor, choreographer. She served as Advisor to the Chairman ABT's Board of Governing Trustees from 2002-2007 and is still faculty member at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. She lectures for Duke Corporate Education with a class on Excellence, co-founded Princeton Dance & Theater Studio in 2003, and is Co-Artistic Director and a choreographer of DanceVision Youth Ensemble based in Princeton, New Jersey.
An illustrious Dance Magazine Awardee, she joined them to co-produce and host the weekly television show, "Dance New York." She was featured on "Dance in America," in the movie, "Angie," starring Geena Davis, and in the documentary, "Ballet," directed by Frederick Wiseman.
MICHAEL SHANNON
Configuration Dance Theatre's Resident Choreographer, Michael Shannon, was the first American Graduate of the Moscow Choreographic Institute, Bolshoi Ballet Academy, first American Principal Dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet since its founding in 1776, Principal Dancer of the Vienna State Opera Ballet, and England's Birmingham Royal Ballet under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and Lady Sarah Chatto.
In 1994, Shannon began working with actors, choreographing and staging "Monday After the Miracle" which premiered in Moscow and was awarded Best Play of 1995. Since that time, thirty-five of his commissioned original works for classical and contemporary ballet have premiered in Europe and the United States.
In 2008, he received a YAGP Outstanding Choreographers Award. The New York Times described his newest works, "What's the Pointe," "Yumeji," and "Tchaicotic," as "atmospheric reverie, sexy, ballet to blush by, stabbing footwork, canons of movement, and striking patterns." The Buffalo News described these works as "unequivocal standouts, captivating, intimate, sensual and slick, reminds one of Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek and Dwight Rhoden."
