I had a discussion with a native speaker from China (Shanghai) about this... he was convinced my boyfriend spoke "Cantonese" since there was no such thing as "Taiwanse" I believe it's not a language, but it's definitely a distinct dialect like a southern accent as they drop h's in words and pronounce some tones differently for ex: xian1sheng would be pronounced xian1sheng1, both 1st tones rather than one with a neutral tone.

actually they both speak "Mandarin" (called guoyu in taiwan and putonghua on the mainland). The difference in some tones and vocab is just superficial. It's the same language. HOWEVER, there is a real Taiwanese dialect, also known as (southern)Hokkien or Minanyu, which is distinct from Mandarin. So yes, Taiwan does have its own language!

Both countries primarily speak Mandarin, known in Taiwan as "guoyu" and in the mainland as "putonghua". The difference in some tones and vocab is only superficial. It's the same language. However, Taiwan does have its own language, called Taiwanese, Southern Hokkien or Minanyu. This is mainly spoken in southern Taiwan and is distinct from Mandarin.
