Doug is the closest ... ( 2 months ago by phrydoom)
Doug is the closest thing Whitesnake has had to another Sykes. He has even learned the solos note for note, and plays accordingly--unlike De Martini, Vai, Beach, which often add their own styles into the equation. Hell, even his tone is basically the same. Doug is to Sykes what Jon Levin is to Lynch...clones. David Coverdale stated he wanted someone capable of recreating that 87 album style and technique...well he succeeded. IMO

Well Zakk's a bloody good heavy player, Doug has a much sweeter tone and a cleaner sharper sound so i guess Doug. John Sykes is a legend but Aldrich is no clone, not to a guitarist at least, untamed ears might struggle to notice the subtle differences. They play a similar style but technique is very different.

Acutally Doug has his own line of pickups co-designed by John Suhr the boutique guitar builder, Reb Beach uses Suhrs too

As a guitarist, I disagree wit you my fellow guitar player. Doug is as close as David has come to replacing Sykes. And I feel he is no different than Jon Levin. When Vai played "In the "Still of the Night", it sounded like Vai's interpretation; when Aldrich plays it, it sounds like Sykes note-for-note. That is a fact. Even Reb Beach plays the original written material differently. Aldrich doesn't.

Hey I like him a lot, but David admitted he didn't want to work Sykes again and but wanted a player similar in style and writting. He succeeded and if no one here hears it, fine, and I'm glad David Coverdale is of the same opinion as me.

Well, firstly thanks for a civil response, most of the time i get people beign arseholes telling me where to stick my opinions (having said that i've got a flithy mind so they soon regret it. hehehe) secondly Doug is a huge Sykes fan so he maybe thought Johns solos didn't need any improvement and decided to play it as written. You've got valid opinions but i thought you were talking about in general not in just whitesnake playing, in which case you are quite correct, but, hey they're both good.

Dougie is great. He was great with Dio, and he's great in this band! Killing the Dragon is probably my favorite Dio album.
And to those who are commenting on him learning the solos close to original, well he did that with Dio as well. Maybe he just respects the recorded versions.

Doug fits into Whitesnake very well. When he's sitting there playing away on the LP he is sooo like Syke's its unbelievable. Might not be the same like but you'd think Doug got tought by Sykes lol. I like Reb, but i think whitesnake would be better without him and just keep Doug in lol

No way man! Reb and Doug have a brilliant contrast in styles. They make up one of the best guitar pairings i've ever heard. The only pairing more tuned into eachother is Adrian Smith and Dave Murray (sorry Janick Fans, gotta stick with the oldies)

I personally love all of Whitesnake's guitarists. And John Sykes' work with Blue Murder was my favorite, over all the Whitesnake stuff. But I love them all. Doug Aldrich is amazing. As is Reb. And Sykes. Just own up to that fact. They can destroy the guitar. They can't be categorized in the same way.

Met Doug in Oz. Absolute gentleman. Guitar genius. Check out Dio and House Of Lords if you like him. I told him he has been inspirational to me from a young age. He very humbly accepted the compliment.
He was one todays top ten guns no if buts or maybes.

I like his style and the sound of course. His bluesy style is perfect for Whitesnake's songs. Dave Coverdale was always inspired by blues and that is how his songs are (lots of them). Anyways, Doug is just awesome player, wish I could play like him hehe.
