jail breaking is like an iphone wayof hacking and if you didnt have the latest version it helped you download apps. if you do it there is a small chance of failing but if it fails it can mess up your iphone
if that happens all you need to do is restore it and back it up

well unlocking is being able to use any sim card on the iphone. jailbreaking is a program known as cydia and installer witch allows u to download endless amounts of apps that dont exist on regular iphones for example video recorder,etc. and its safe on the 1rst gen iphone not to sure about unlocking a 3g i heard its possible but never seen it personnally
