wrong- she has said in interviews that she wrote it to be ironic but due to the fact that she wasnt very popular at the time she didnt pay too much attention to checking that all her examples were ironic

Wrong. You either ... ( 1 week ago by Liproll)
Wrong. You either get it - or you don´t. People who don´t understand what irony is will NEVER understand. It´s all about IQ. The ability to understand. If you are born dumb, you don´t get smart later by practicing hard.
If you have to CHECK whether your examples are ironic or not - you do not understand the concept of irony. Period.
It´s like Ed says: A song called "Ironic" written by someone who doesn´t know what irony is = Irony

I ALWAYS thought ... ( 1 week ago by symbolt)
I ALWAYS thought that the song was just about the way some people would call unfortunate events "ironic," where in fact they're just sad and calling them ironic is proof of a vaguely adolescent feigned abstract aloofness in place to cover up for those people's inability to face the facts and real feelings, and how ironic it is that these people calling these things ironic is actually ironic in itself once you see the clay feet their thinking is based on.I don't know what SHE wanted to say, though.

Still, it's a good song, and it is quite ironic. Plus she does write great lyrics. What about Coldplay? There's some serious scope for comedy in their words; The Beatles, too. Most lyrics are shit and don't mean anything; most of Alanis's are just the opposite. I guess that's why we take exception to this.
"I wrote a song for you/what a thing to do/and it was all yellow."
Need I say more? ;-)

Maybe you could look up the words 'opinion' and 'expression' and try and see if you can figure out what they mean. Once you've done that, get back to me and I can help you with the next step. ;-)

Ed Byrnes routine ... ( 1 week ago by FIFTY2WEEKS)
Ed Byrnes routine is perefectly explains the concept of "irony". Alanis Morisettes song is very catchy and listenable, but when I heard the lyrics I did a double take...it spoils a good song
Well, actually ... ( 6 days ago by WiLLiaMsTRaNge01)
Well, actually there are quite a few people who may not score amazingly high on an IQ test but still work really hard and can then become intellectuals... the concept of "you were born dumb, now put up with it" is kind of dumb in itself (yay, irony).
Also, knowing the meaning of a word and being able to spot it in action doesn't really require a great deal of intelligence, just a clear explanation...
And please don't say "Period". It makes you sound like an opinionated idiot, frankly...

IQ is like height. You do not become taller by studying hard.
"... the concept of "you were born dumb, now put up with it" is kind of dumb in itself (yay, irony)." That´s not irony, that´s just STUPID. Sound familiar?
"..And please don't say "Period". It makes you sound like an opinionated idiot, frankly..." Translation: "And please don´t say "period". It makes it harder for me to deny that I HAVE NO CLUE."
Good stuff, good stuff...

By your logic, there's no way that I'm stupid...
I have an IQ of 131. Doesn't mean anything to me. I do well because I work. It's called a work ethic. IQ may be like height, but it doesn't define intelligence, just corners down one area of it...
And I have no clue? Because I disagree with you, it automatically means that I'm some inbred retard with porridge for brains?
Actually, you are ... ( 6 days ago by Lanthia)
Actually, you are incorrect - IQ score can be easily increased through practice. And while we're here, my Daughter and I both have IQ scores that put us in the top 4 out of 10,000 people. It's because we are really good at those tests. We also find we are very good at aptitude tests without necessarily having any other aptitudes. Perhaps that is ironic.

No offence to Ed ... ( 4 days ago by RazielUk1)
No offence to Ed Byrne as he is legendary in my honest opinion but maybe quite possibly as a stylistic Alanis Morissette called the song 'Ironic' knowing that the lyrics are actually just unfortunate events and therefore knew that the song 'Ironic' would be ironic because it actually had no irony in it what so ever. However if she sat there to abide by this stylistic she has some serious thinking to do about appealing to her target audience, in particular Ed Byrne lol. :D
hmmm... isn't it ... ( 3 days ago by shifre)
hmmm... isn't it ironic that Einstein failed all his tests or is it just pure sense that these tests don't acutally test anything other than your gender, or age, or how many of these tests you've done?
(Continued)
Yup, that's fact. ... ( 3 days ago by shifre)
Yup, that's fact. Scientists have already said IQ tests are bad, simply because their design makes it easier for boys (maybe girls, I read this ages ago) to get higher marks.
As for the period thing, it's much easier to argue and makes you sound arrogant and ignorant because you're not looking for another answer or considering others point of view.
Sorry but your arrogance is really annoying. Go join a debate team, you'll learn how to use that quality well.
Good stuff, good stuff
Okay, Einstein ... ( 2 days ago by shifre)
Okay, Einstein might have been a myth but the rest remains true. I have a friend who fails IQ tests all the time and she always ends up with A or A*s whereas her sister who aces IQ tests, is in the library 24/7 fails them.
